In January, 2007 the CURB Board of Directors agreed to address the 'taboo' subject of prison sexual abuse in commemorating Restorative Justice Week 2007 under the theme "Not Part of the Sentence". A review of Restorative Justice Week 2007 is available Here.
CURB wrote numerous press releases to highlight that sexual and other abuses of prisoners are NOT part of the sentence imposed by any Court and therefore must be eliminated. We also educated the public about the problem and consequences of prisoner abuse through pamphlets and multimedia resources all of which are available Here.
Apart from international agencies such as Stop Prisoner Rape (now Just Detention International) in the USA and Survivors in the UK, CURB has collaborated with the Council of Prison Chaplains and Ministers (COPCAM), the Rape Crisis Society and Dolly & Associates Limited to provide support and resources for prisoners and ex-prisoners who have survived prison sexual abuse.
In addition to securing crisis response counselling and other training for those who work with prisoners and ex-prisoners, CURB has approached the Trinidad and Tobago Government for permission and funding to conduct surveys and focus group interviews with inmates, ex-inmates and others in the criminal justice system and to host a consultation on the issue which would be informed by data collected from the surveys and focus groups.
These strategies shall better guide us in making effective recommendations to Caribbean governments to eliminate prison sexual and other abuses.
However, to date (February 2010), CURB had not received word from the Ministry of National Security in Trinidad and Tobago as to its willingness to allow or fund this much-needed research and crucial interventions for prisoners and ex-prisoners who have survived prison sexual abuse.
If you or someone you know is a survivor of prison sexual abuse and want to (anonymously) share your testimony OR if your church or NGO wants to join our coalition to Stop Prison Abuse, please Contact Us.
